Open dies can be used with a power hammer, treadle hammer or in some cases a hand hammer to forge specific images into ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Open dies are one sided, meaning they only produce the image on one side.

For this turtle die you would use 3/4 inch round stock. Same turtle made starting with more metal so you get more flashing (excess metal squished out the sides after the image is formed. Cut away unwanted flashing with a port-a-band saw and/or use a hand file to define the image. The handled open die used to make the turtle is the product you would be buying, not the turtle.
