Open dies can be used with a power hammer, treadle hammer or in some cases a hand hammer to forge specific images into ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Open dies are one sided, meaning they only produce the image on one side. Cut away excess flashing with a port-a-band saw. Use hand files to further define the image.

The open die with handle used to make this large mouse is the product you would be buying, not the mouse. This large mouse can be made with 5/8 inch round stock hammered directly into the open die. For production work and to get a cleaner image without flashing purchase the closed die called "pre-mouse" to get this pre formed teardrop. Form the pre-mouse, re-heat and hammer into the large mouse open die.
